Adjectives...
Adjectives are used as predicates and noun modifiers. Ther inflict and are
divided into two groups, い adjectives and な adjectives according to the infliction.
In な adjective sentences ending in です, the な is dropped from the adjective.
- この りんご は 大きい です。- This apple is big.
- 私 は げんき です。- I am well.
becomes To make the negative form of い adjectives, the い at the end is
changed to くない with one exception, the negative for いい です (it's good) is
よくない です。For な adjectives the ですでは ありません。
- この りんご は 大きくない です。- This apple is not big.
- 私は げんき では ありません。- I am not well.
If an adjective is put before a noun to modify it, you do need to include
the な of the な adjective.
- 田中 さん は やさしい 人 です。- Tanaka is a kind man.
- 田中 さん は げんきな 人 です。- Tanaka is a healthy man.
When asking someone their opinion or impression of something (which you
would expect an adjective sentence in reply to), use どう です か。
- 日本語 の べんきょう は どう です か。- How is Japanese study?
- むずかしい です が とても おもしろい です。- It's difficult, but very interesting.
