Counters...

In Japanese, there are two numerical systems, the 一つ(ひとつ), 二つ( ふたつ) system, and the abstract 一 (いち) 二 (に) system. Counting things can be done in two ways.
  1. Using the 一つ, 二つ etc up to 10.
  2. arrow かばん の なか に りんご が 一つ あります。 - There is an apple in the bag.
  3. Using the 一, 二 system combined with a counter. There are many counters, but three common ones are: まい(枚) for thin flat objects such as paper and CDs, だい for vehicles, electrical things such as a TV, and にん for people.
  4. arrow かばん の 中 に CD が にまい あります。- There are 2 CDs in the bag.
arrow へや に おとこ のひと が 三にん います。- There are 3 men in a room.
To say how many times you do things, use かい.
To say how often you do something, say the amount of time in which you do it, e.g. いっしゅうかん for one week, いっかげつ for one month, 一年 (いちねん) for one year etc.
