Something then afterwards something else...
The sentence pattern is:
Verb1 た form / noun の あとで , Verb2
This sentence pattern means the action or occurrence denoted by Verb2 takes
place after the action or occurrence denoted by Verb1 or Noun has taken place.
- 新しい の を 買った 後で なくした 時けい が 見つかりました。 - After I bought a new watch I found
the one I had lost.
- 仕事の後で飲みに行きませんか。- Shall we go for a drink after work?
Something with something else...
The sentence pattern is:
Verb1 て form / Verb1 ない form ないで, Verb2
Verb1 is an action or condition which accompanies the action denoted by Verb2.
Look at examples below. Using this pattern, whether soy sauce is used or
not when the action 食べます (tabemasu) takes place is stated. Verb1 and Verb2
are actions done by the same person.
- しょうゆ を つけて 食べます。- I eat it with soy sauce.
- しょうゆ を つけないで 食べます。 - I eat it without soy sauce.
Something rather than something else...
The sentence pattern is:
Verb1 ない form ないで, Verb2a
This pattern is used when the speaker indicates a course of action taken
out of two alternative possibilities presented.
- 日曜日 は どこに も 行かないで、 うち で ゆっくり 休みます。 - Next Sunday I won't go anywhere.
I will rest at home instead.
