Location
To say something is in a particular place, use object + は + place + に
+ あります/います。The focus of the sentence is on the place. To ask the question
of where something is, use the same sentence pattern with どこ (where).
- ブタペスト は どこ に あります か。- Where is Budapest?
- ブタペスト は ハンガリー に あります - Budapest is in Hungary.
Using positional information
There are a number of postpositions to use for indicating where something
is. They come towards the end of the sentence, just before the verb, unlike
English prepositions.
- 本は テリビ の うえ に あります。- The book in on top of the TV.
- 犬 は マーク さん の まえ に います。 - The dog is in front of Marc.
- マーク さん は 犬 の うしろ にいます。 - Marc is behind the dog.
- ストーンヘンゲ は バース の ちかく に あります。 - Stonehenge is near Bath.
- えき の となり に ぎんこう が あります。 - The station is next to the bank.
The directional phrases are:
- ~の 上 (うえ) - On (top) of
- ~の 下 (した) - Under
- ~の 中 (なか) - Inside
- ~の 隣 (となり) - Next to
- ~の 近く (ちかく) - Close to/near
- ~の 右 (みぎ) - On the right
- ~の 左 (ひだり) - On the left
- ~の 前 (まえ) - In front of
- ~の 後ろ (うしろ) - Behind
- ~の 横 (よこ) - Side
- ~のあいだ - Between
- の 向かい (むかい) - Opposite
- の ななめ - Diagonally opposite
