Ability/Possibility できます。。。
できます(出来ます) is the verb which expresses ability or possibility. A noun
and verb dictionary form + こと before が indicates the content of ability
or possibility. When a verb is used to describe ability or possibility, こと
should be attached to the dictionary form of the verb to make it a normalised
phrase, and then が できます is put after that.
- マーク さん は たくさん かんじ を かく こと が できます。 - Marc can write a lot of Kanji.
- カード で はらう こと が できます。- You can pay by credit card.
Dictionary verb form
This form is the basic form of a verb and it's called the verb dictionary
form. Verbs are given in this form in the dictionary, hence the name.
How to make this form from the ますform is given below.
- Group 1 verbs:
For the verbs of this group, the last sound of the ます form is
always in the い row of hiragana. Replace it with the sound in the う row to
make the dictionary form.
- Group 2 verbs:
Omit ます from ます form, and attach る.

- Group 3 verbs:
There are only two verbs in this group, they are irregular,
and change as follows:
- します
する
- きます
くる
Hobbies - しゅみ。。。
The verb dictionary form is used along with こと to express the content of
hobbies more concretely that the noun alone can do.
- 私 の しゅみ は おんがく です。- My hobby is music
- 私 の しゅみ は おんがく を きく こと です。 - My hobby is listening to music
