To like...が すき です。
In the sentence "I like bananas.", 'like' is a verb and 'bananas' is the
object. However in Japanesem 'bananas' takes the particle が and they are described
as being 'likeable', using an adjective rather than a verb.
- 私 は バナナ が すき です。 - As for me, bananas are likeable.
The question word どんな can be used to ask what kind of things someone likes.
- どんな たべもの が すき です か。- What kind of food do you like
Degrees of understanding...
The verb わかります (分かります) also takes the particle が and is often used with
degree words to indicate how much is understood. From high to low:
- よく わかります。- I understand very well
- だいたい わかります。
- 少(すく)し わかります。
- あまり わかりません。
- ぜんぜん わかりません。- I don't understand at all
